Using New Media in Your Marketing Mix Video (Part 1)
Mon Oct, 2010 by Digital Bus
Michigan State University recently hosted a discussion from Derek Mehraban about streamlining media efforts more effectively by integrating new media into the traditional media mix.The 3-part video guide focuses on the differences and advantages of new media integration, which he also teaches about in his course at MSU: New Media Driver’s License. Topics Mehraban discusses include social media, brand management, how to capture leads, and much more.

This class session (all three parts) was really helpful for a new business challenge I’m preparing for.
I have a client that is a distributor (not selling direct to consumers). They are interested in finding out how they can not only talk to their customers (retailers) in the digital space, but also how social media might help them generate some “pull through” — getting the end user to ask for the product at retail. That means creating distinct personas for their direct customers (stores, restaurants and bars — there’s three right off the bat!), and for the end users of their product (I’m guessing there will be at least 4 different personas there). I’m looking forward to walking through that process with my client; we’ll both learn a ton.
Gathering the data to create a complete “before” picture of their online presence is also going to be a crucial step — and a fun one, I think. This lecture gave me a great step-by-step guide to how to approach that.
In fact, I think it might be helpful for my clients to watch this lecture — I think it will really fire them up!
Thanks for your wonderful speech! It’s one of the most practical lessons I have ever had. Definitely, I will watch it again since some special tools and skills need to be learned and applied. There was something I didn’t catch up very well. One is the “Google Alert Tracker”. I searched online but couldn’t find the tracker.com. Could you please explain it a little bit more? I think collecting these data for a company before submitting the proposal is extremely important. Could you please introduce us more free online tools for the data collection and analysis?
This video teaches me so much, but one of the most important things I learned from Derek’s lecture is “ideas drive strategy”.
Honestly, social media sometimes can be overwhelming. Think about how many little icons you have seen after a blog post when you want to share it with world. As a social media and public relations starter, I often feel some pressure from maintaining all of my social media profiles and creating contents on them. Sometimes I am wondering: do we really need a whole package of social media tools if we are just running a family-sized widget company? After seeing this video, my answer is: NO & YES.
The “No” means we should first come up a big idea, then let the idea drive our strategy. Big or small, any business should have its own idea to differentiate itself as a sparkling point. Hence before we dive into setting accounts for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube… we should think over our selling point/creative message. As a PR agent, we should tell our client what we can publish on Facebook about their business, which will show how cool they are, instead of repeating the sentence like “we should be on Facebook because everybody is there”. Ideas not only guide strategy, but also provide credibility for our proposals. Besides, talking about multi-tasking on social media, as I am gaining experience of managing my various accounts, I find it easier to focus on ideas first, and then use different tools to promote my ideas. The goal is not to post 10 tweets every day, but to express my opinions and build my own brand.
How about the “YES”? I think we should try to open as many conversation channels as we can because the current environment expects us to do so. Different social media tools may reach different audiences. It is important that we don’t miss anybody important.
Ideas come first. As magic as social media is, you need unique message to stand out from the crowds.
Overall this presentation is very helpful for a both a customer and social media expert point-of-view. When Mehraban talks about the importance of influence, it struck me as similar to the whole question of “If a tree falls in the forest and no one heard it, does it make a sound?” The same thing is discusses in this presentation, if we are posting valuable content or interesting stories out there, etc. whether as a client or marketing professional and no one ever sees it, then what good is it?
If we want to be successful with digital marketing and be viewed as a trusted source or someone with influence, then it is important to do the foot work. Forward on interesting pieces, retweet articles/comments of interest, and look like you really know what is out there and are keeping on top of things. This will help you as a professional and help with the increasingly valuable connections that you have in your network. So don’t be afraid to do a little heavy lifting and it will pay off in the long run. Just being a lone wolf out there without making any connections won’t do much for making you look like (again, as a business or marketing prof.) a influencial or trusted source.
Derek only lightly touched on actually watching advertisements in Part 1, but I wanted to expand a bit on traditional advertising. There is no doubt the digital world fosters conversations between people and brands. It builds stronger relationships, it gives people the chance to participate and interact. Sometimes, though, I wonder where people get the motivation to actually participate. Sure, tech-saavy people embrace the conversation and seek it out, but not everyone is so gung-ho.
They need a stimulant.
They need a spark.
They need a reason to participate.
This is why I think traditional advertising is still a driving force behind the new media movement. I love advertising. For me, it’s an art which also means it’s subjective. Everyone has an opinion. We see a bad commercial or print ad and we may ignore it and move on. We see a really bad commercial or print ad and we Tweet about it, post it on Facebook or our blogs. The same happens with really good or funny ads. I think this is a completely effective way to start a conversation. It has to ultimately come in the form of quality content. And whether that form is a company blog offering insights on their products, posts on Twitter with cool links or interesting articles or even that “dying” :30 spot- quality content is the driving force behind people’s actions.
Good interview Derek. Couple things to point on. I liked how you said that advertising is still useful. Communication in our business is not only necessary, it is essential. Also i agree on having an IDEA. Ideas are what drives dreams and goals to a finished product. With ideas in the digital world, we must find a way to differentiate ourselves and segment. The Coca Cola example was helpful because it described the importance of pulling through and bounce rates. I believe that Permission based marketing is the key to online success. I feel this way because it is measurable and easy to track. Also the 20% of 10 new consumers was a good example of what happens today.
With today’s society being too “impatient” we must find a way to differentiate ourselves from our competitors and segment better than them. That is the tricky part.
This video is a really good introduction of digital marketing. What I learn a lot here is the different between digital marketing and traditional marketing. With digital marketing, you can have many segments of your target audience whereas traditional media only allow single target due to the fact that it will cost more. Furthermore, digital marketing is measurable. You can always track how many audience have view your site and use your on-line promotion. But there are still value for traditional media. It is still one of the influential ways to reach audience. Therefore, what a good company will do is to leverage their marketing resources on both traditional and digital media.
No matter what I studied in this class or what I heard from this presentation, I have to realize the social media has changed and played a great important role in our marketing. But I have to admit that I even did not know what is Linkedin and how to use Twitter before this course. As for now, social media has permeated every area of people’s life and business. As a result, to know how to utilize social media and digital marketing has begun a big thing. I strongly agree with this point that even if you have a good creative idea, if you do not know how to transmit, the idea will be no value. From this perspective, it proves people should and must know how to use the wide communication of social media sufficiently. When people decide to target one market and to make a media plan, they should connect with the social media and traditional media. From this presentation, I learned so much strategy to target the market and I also wish I could use them in my marketing business, like collecting the data before approaching, using social media to transmit information and so on.
The digital world being ‘a blending of skill sets’ is an astute observation of the talents necessary to succeed with online marketing. One must be able to create a product that is successful creatively – but you also must be able to validate the numbers that this effort will generate.
Connections: networking has always been an integral part of success in business. The digital aspect of this has taken things to an entirely new level; LinkedIn, Twitter, blogs, etc – these all contribute to your future career prospects. This can include not only future employers – but perhaps people you can team up with on special projects, through matching of skill sets.
Determining the market that a product appeals to, is vital to the success of any digital marketing approach. By defining the end user, you can create specific campaigns that will generate revenues that will please not only your client, but validate your fees for developing the campaign.
A great talk and overview of the basic concepts behind developing an effective plan for a digital marketing campaign.
I really enjoyed watching all three of these lectures. It was a nice refresher, because they were very similar to the Saturday lecture for the NMDL class. Derek is a great speaker and makes this stuff all really interesting and easy to understand. I think the most important thing that people can gather from this particular lecture is the importance of using digital media to connect to others in the business world. LinkedIn and Twitter are great tools for connecting with both individuals and companies that you may want to work for one day. Re-tweeting is also something that is really great for building connections on Twitter and having important people in your chosen industry notice you. It today’s world, its all about who you know. Having the right connections is the way the best way to get on your chosen career path.
One important point that Derek made in this lecture is the fact that everyone out there is using digital marketing, so it’s not enough to just say “we will build a Twitter and Facebook page for your company.” Almost every company has a Twitter and a Facebook, so its not about just being “on” digital anymore – its about the actual message and the idea you convey through these digital tools. That is something that most people overlook when building a campaign for a company.
Thanks for the great lectures, Derek. The campaigns class was lucky to have you as a guest speaker!
You are a great speaker, which allows individuals to really listen to you and engage in your speech. A large piece of the part 1 speech that I found most interesting was how “building your Rolodex” is so important for individuals in the career world. Having a linkdin, a firm handshake, and being able to communicate effectively is the most important in building yourself in the career world. Commenting on others blogs, tweets, builds a reputation for yourself through the social media marketing world. I know a lot of individuals do not realize how important social media is and how imperative social media advertising is for the companies. In today’s society people skip through commercials- not paying attention to what is being said and because of this social media and getting for important for the companies to be recognized.
Of the presented concepts the most memorable for me was that of the ‘digital handshake.’ Computer mediated environments have produced incredible opportunities to relationship building and network maintenance that simply were not possible a few years ago. I remember hauling around an actual Rolodex in high school trying to build a network of professionals everywhere I went. Now that I even owned such a thing seems ludicrous to me not to mention how difficult it would be to personally contact one of these individuals and garner useful industry information from them. I could send a letter and they might not even remember my face. I could call on the phone and they may have a changed number. Now I have thousands of friends available at the click of my mouse for easy fast paced conversations that build real time mutual benefits. What a wonderful tool for everyone!
On a related note I am continually inspired by Web 2.0 systems and have gained a position on a research team in the field with professor Joe Walther and others that deals directly with CMC. I am currently doing research into the way that credibility is mediated electronically. Recent findings are suggesting the growing importance of badges, stars, pictures, ‘profile completeness’ and network size as cues that highlight the credibility and influence of any given individual on the web. As information develops it will be crucial to adapt appropriately in order to maintain the health of our profiles and personalities in these communities.
I was also thrilled to be reminded about placing hard cash values on all marketing pursuits. It is an unmeasurable gift to have the level of analytic power and the size of direct consumer data that we have today. It cannot be reiterated or emphasized enough that without direct and quantifiable impact to target persona’s awards, press coverage and even general deliverable metrics mean nothing.
I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this video series and recommended it without hesitation to my ‘followership.’ I would be interested to review some campaigns that really smashed it out of the park on the persona designs. David Meerman Scott includes a great high-level understanding of how to gather the proper data but the process is still lacking specific guidelines and best practices. I have yet to take a campaign focused course in ADV but I will likely be able to gather some recommendation from Professor Rick Cole on which class would offer the best coverage.
When I was interning at a PR agency, we have a client want to increase their online visibility. The first thing we do is to rebuild their company website because it was awful: not updating regularly, hard to find information, not user-friendly at all. It was a great example of how a good landing page works to keep attention from customers. If a company wants to start promoting their business online, they must create a good homepage. Think about if you go to a store and you can’t find the product there you know it works for you and the salesman is not able to help you, either, you won’t want to do business with them; so does your company website, you have to let your customers easily reach information they want. Just like what Derek said, we better customized landing page for every target segment so they can be attracted and stay to discover more about our products.
Digital marketing has been a hot topic for a long time; however, it will still be the mainstream of marketing no matter now or in the future. Speaking of digital marketing, we cannot ignore some media tools spoken in the video, such as Google Adwords or Google Analytics. Learning these media skills will be very helpful for any PR practitioners to have a good start in the field of media planning.
For many digital companies, there are several fundamental trainings for media invoices, but mastering media tools is not equal to a professional media planner. In fact, the ability to qualify the number, to sell numbers, and to interpret charts are the heart of a media expert. That is, big ideas depend on how interpret the numbers, and then media planners follow the analysis to forge a complete and influential media strategy. Specifically, these media strategies also include build a close relationship with customers through the connection of social media. It is a trend that media planners utilize social media to accumulate reputations for their supported brands and try to convert the useful reputations into powerful influences; especially, such effective influences in online community indeed play an indispensable role in the digital age.
Part 1 of this class session was a great overview of digital marketing strategy, summed up by “you need to give clients quantifiable results.” Thank you Derek for walking us through ways to do this, while also giving us reminders on firm handshakes and good presentation skills. After viewing Part 1, I would still appreciate a few examples on putting a value on conversions. While I know this will differ from client to client, that seems like an important part of the equation and more information would be great. Thanks again for giving us inspiration and tips for more “sticky” sites with less “bounce.”
Thanks for the excellent lecture! What I could think about from the video is how to use the website to promote the brand. Derek mentions some effective strategies in the video which I think is really helpful. For my perspective, I assumed that in order to make successful online branding, it is very important to define your brand up front. That means that when visitors arrive at your website, make them know immediately what you do and why they should care what you’re providing on your website. For my personal experience, far too many website shroud their identity in flashy graphics and ambiguous slogans without telling people what the company or person actually does. Therefore, here are my recommendation to deal with this problem. Keep your eyes as a new vistor to your website, and judge it with the question like does it spell out exactly what your brand stands for? If not, it must be redesigned so that your identity and purpose are unmistakable.
Interesting video!
What I learned from this video was: social media is the number source of digital strategy. Sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin allow people to talk about themselves and therefore create relevant content that appeals to others. This cycle of sharing makes enables the web to be more interesting and useful, in business as well as in life. Although some of the points made were mentioned in our Sept 25th meeting, it was nice to hear them again, just to serve as a reminder of the numerous ways social media impacts society and the online community.
I found this lecture is really helpful for me to understand social media in a more detailed way. It no doubt persuades me that social media will play a much more important role comparing with traditional media, which I kind of disagree in the past. Comparing with traditional media, you have a fast and convenient way to know about your clients. Lots of tools you can use to understand what your customers or clients are thinking.
From this lecture, I have the feeling that if you take full advantage of social media, it will serve you best and you can get everything you want to know about your your clients. Yes, understanding how to use social media is important. But, next you have to think about how to attract people to visit your website for a longer time and take action. You have to set goals and use your unique ideas to drive your strategy. Lots of things that social media help you find out about your clients can make you better segment your clients.
So, in such a fast-changing world, knowing your clients is crucial, and social media can help achieve this goal.
Firm handshake! From this video I learned that I need to toughen mine up a bit and show that I mean business! At the stage that I am in which is the prehistoric stage in social media I need to be the one reaching out to others. I learned about retweeting and commenting on others blogs so that they will spend time with me and my company. Also obvious but a good point was that the big idea still needs to be there and that the idea will drive the strategy of how to get that big idea out there. It is also important to know your audience and who you are trying to reach because 20% of customers are the most important.
I really enjoyed this presentation — thank you very much for sharing! One of the segments that I found to be extremely interesting was the “why digital works” and why people like to talk about companies. I just thought that it was so intriguing that the number one reason people choose to interact with companies online is because they want coupons or discounts. I found this to be interesting because it really is true. I “like” companies Facebook pages or follow them on Twitter not because I’m trying to find out more about the brand – I obviously already know a substantial amount of information since I’m choosing engage with them digitally. The fact that we choose to engage with companies through social media proves my feeling that consumers are seeking out these companies online, in a new medium, almost as if they are trying to find out “What’s in it for me?” Companies benefit from consumer interaction online with their brand because it builds their fan base, creates WOM advertising, etc…but I feel like consumers expect something in return (coupons, discounts) for liking a Facebook page or following a company on Twitter, myself included.
Connecting and making connections through social media is very important to me right now, especially when I’m starting to look into the job world and trying to “get hired.” A big part of that for me right now is LinkedIn. I agree with Derek Mehraban that LinkedIn “is one of the most valuable tools” that I could use for this. I have indeed put my Facebook on somewhat of a “pause” as he said, and have been focusing a lot on LinkedIn to promote myself, because I am trying to build my career that way. Now I need to continue to build my “rolodex” and keep creating these connections to give me a better advantage.
I also learned a lot about “doing the work” by sharing content, retweeting, commenting on people’s blogs in order to build my reputation in the media world and make even more connections that way. I have to keep in mind too that “everybody is doing it” so I must do it in a way that is creative and unique to me in order to be recognized.
I understand what Derek is talking about when he talked about presentation. I agree presentation is a big key in getting clients. Like the saying “all talk and no action”. If you are just going to talk about what you are going to do you will lose the clients because they probably all heard this before. But if you are to show presentation or visual aid it will catches the client attention thus letting them now that you can back up what you say. Another thing that Derek talked about in this video is networking online. Back in the days when there are no facebook or linkedin or any social media interaction sites people network by going to events and passing up business cards to other. Now, it is so much easier to network with sites like linkedin and twitter. You don’t need to leave your office or home to network you can just do it online. Networking is good for you because you can meet people who can referral you to somebody in their 300+ network circle. You can easily built your network within minutes.
This is a great lecture! Very engaging and informing. Derek is an excellent public speaker. I agree with his comment that LinkedIn is the most valuable resource for us. Potentially we can build a career there on the site. This class has helped me realized that I need to connect with people of influence. The number one reason people interact with companies online is becuase they want a discount or coupon, and because they like the brand. The more followers the better.
Derek will be the key note speaker at The Marketing Resource Fair, November 4th at Spartan Stadium. I am very excited for this event and everyone is invited to attend.
What a great video, I never knew about Google analytical tools before or how they could be integrated with websites to identify the bounce rate/sticky level of those websites. This video really sheds light on the terms digital marketing and social media, the two are different but through social media a company can digitally market their brand.
The business strategies explained in this video are very useful. One can digitally market their product to as many consumer groups as they like whereas this is not possible with traditional media.
The most useful part of this video to me was the conversion rate, if you get ”10 people to click the landing page out of those 10 how many people will subscribe?” This puts a dollar value on click through rates! What a great way to make a presentation to a client who is on the fence about hiring a digital media company to increase product sales!
I really enjoyed this presentation and even managed a few laughs when you were speaking about the importance of a handshake when you are looking to hire. I remember on our first Saturday session class—you came around and shook most of our hand and commented that I had a solid handshake (this was something my dad always drilled into my head). I also enjoyed listening to you speak about Linkedin—a network I am so glad I am now a part of since the beginning of the class. I have managed to connect with some prior employers and many relatives who have offered to help me find an internship next summer already. I also find that your willingness to help your students connect with future employers is another great motivator to do well in this course. Another topic I was particularly interested in, is the process of creating buyer personas… David Meerman Scott wrote about this idea in The New Rules of Media & PR and I am interested to learn more about how a company goes about formulating these personas and how to appeal to them once the targets have been created.
Very informative lecture! I love the point that Derek makes about how digital media is able to provide concrete numbers and figures that allow the client to see conversion rate, bounce rate, etc.
I recently had a social media internship and one of their first questions for me was “Well, how do I know that I am getting the results I want?” and I was sort of at a loss. I knew that Google analytics was able to provide statistics for certain things but I didn’t know what those certain things were. I liked the example of using the information of a conversion from a trial offer to a loyal customer and turning that information into something relevant for digital media. I know if I would have done something like that for my internship, they would have been impressed and happy with getting quantifiable data.
It’s a great speech, thank you Derek.
I am attending the New Media Drivers License this semester; it’s a very wonderful and useful class. Strongly recommend anyone who interest in Internet Marketing and Social Media.
A great part in the video is you talked about connect the skills we owned but upgrade it with digital skills; for example, presenting numbers to clients and media plan with Google.
Another value is you remind me to stay connected with other people. Relationship and influence are so critical, but the reputation won’t set up in one day, it requires hard work and spends lots of time.
The best lesson I learned from the clip is the importance of creating the big idea for the strategy. In order to come up of the idea, first thing is understand who your perfect customers are. Contrary to traditional media, internet marketing tools able to segment consumers and directly communicate with them. Thus, when making any decisions, always remember to start from customer wants and needs.
This is a great session for anyone interested in building their brand on-line. Although, the speech is mostly directed towards soon to graduated students looking at doing consulting for business, the advice found in this session could really be used for anyone. Pay special attention to the part about building a target audience. Also, there is great advice about how to present clients with quantitative data. As Mehraban explains this quantitative data is important when looking at how well your website succeeds. It is not enough to just create a website for your company, you have to have data that shows that you are reaching those target audiences that you found and Mehraban does a great job of explaining how you can find this data.
Wow! That is all I can say. I learned so much from just this video. The comment on being able to build a website for a client will make one more valuable has stuck with me and has gotten my mind to thinking how can I learn. I am all about challenging myself and making myself more marketable in the workplace. Do you have any suggestions on where I can learn?
The speech is really enlightening which teaches me a lot of practical rules in social media marketing. As highlighted by Derek, building relationship is crucial in social networking, you need to know how to present yourself, how to build your reputation as social media marketers, and how to increase the interaction with your audiences. However, to be differentiated from your competition, you need to find out the “Big Idea” which may drive good strategies. By creating persona, you could segment people into different groups and discover who the best customer is. Then, you should focus on them through your social media tools. Since digital tools, such as Google AdWords, allow you to segment your audiences, you could send them targeting information to reach them more effectively. And your “Big Idea” is the soul of your website which could make your audiences stay longer.
The thing I got out of this was the concept of retweeting. It’s funny when there may be things that you just don’t think is a big deal but really it is. If you retweet someone, it may only take a second, but if you do it enough, people will be curious about you, and often find them following you. It’s a great way for you to get your name out there, without actually having to do alot of manual work.
Great video! I think this lecture is fun in a way that it reveals the idea of consumer using the digital media to earn benefits such as discount coupons. I also liked the emphasis on creating personas for consumers. But before doing this, I’ve learned that I ought to come up with a clear branding strategy whether the media is analog or digital, the rules are applied same. Introduction of various online tools were also helpful. Since I am not familiar with most of the tools that were introduced such as google tracker, I think it is my job to find out what it does and make use of it in my future work.
One point that i really found interested was the point made about DVR and advertisments. Most people want to watch their show and skip all the commercials and advertisements. But one point that i found that was interesting is the point that advertisements and commercials are kind of the “destressors” of television. It definetly has an opportunity for you to back away from your tuned in self, and gives you a chance to relax and laugh, cry, chuckle about the advertisements. Gives you an opportunity to check your email, go to the bathroom or get a glass of milk. I guess some of the things that normal people are into, the things that makes America, America (fast, “we want things now”) are not the most important things. If people were to sit back and let things happen, and not force things, i think people would be a lot happier, and be able to take in and absorb many different brands and companies
The part of the lecture that I found interesting was how companies Google Analytic. I think that companies who use Google Analytic and Google AdWords to optimize their web pages will ultimately have a better relationship with their consumers.
First of all, the video taugh me a lot of things related to digital marketing. I strongly agree with his saying that consumer recommedation is very important to help people buying the product because social media is the number one activitiy on the Web. This new media allow people to interact each other to talk and share their thought of brands or products. Also, the web based communication boost electronic commerce. I found an interesting fact that the number one reason why people interact with company online is because they want a discount or coupons. I learned how goal setting in digital is important; it will strech your technial skill using SMART.
To be honest, I originally do not feel very interested in social media or internet marketing. However, after I went to your new media class, I really realized that the importance of using social networking in today’s world.
Thanks for this amazing lecture which told me a lot of information about how to utilize internet and social media tools to promote company’s brand and personal brand. Now, what I am interested in is the strategy to manage my personal brand and company brand in my future career. And in this lecture you did taught me a lot and what the most important is that content you talked about spurred me to learn more and deeper related knowledge. Thanks again for your lecture and I will continue to research new media which is really useful and helpful to my life and my future career.
Digital marketing became more and more popular in nowadays marketing world. Because digital marketing could be tracked, and it could provide obvious number, so, sometimes, you could provide nice results for your clients. The fist step is to get connection. The more you connect, the more you will get. Second step is to build relationships, which is that you have to present yourself to your consumers. Last step is to get some influence. And I think this is the most important part, as well as the hardest part. You need retweets others, commend their articles, and when people saw you in different places, they might consider to follow you. It takes time.
Another thing I learned from this video is that idea is still important in digital marketing. Everyone use digital marketing strategy today; however, it is idea, making some differentiations.
Besides that, digital marketing help you target your consumer more precisely and make more accurate segmentation. It’s really an efficient marketing method.
Last but not least, set SMART goals and objective are also important to help you build successful digital marketing strategy.
Excellent lecture! Very informative and easily to follow. I think it was very beneficial to know how to put a price on the ad campaigns online for your client. Its completely understandable why digital marketing is so popular and why its going to be very important for advertisers to learn everything digital. I also think it was very beneficial to come up with different personas for different clients; clients should watch this video in order to understand more thoroughly. I also understand the importance of building your online presence as much as you can, and I am definitely going to take the time to build myself up. As an advertisinng/social media starter, I’m looking forward to watching the other videos and learning more techniques about digital marketing.
This video was really helpful for me. I actually was in the class that he spoke at so Ive heard this speech before. None the less it was a good speech and taught me a lot. From the first part what I found most helpful was the fact that with social media you can now target multiple audiences. In the class, we have a client who we are redeveloping their advertising strategies. My client is a heating and cooling company, that has two different markets; commercial and residential. With Derek’s advice, we are now about to target both effectively with the proper use of social media.
This was a great lecture! There was so much information in it that is very useful. One of the most important things I took away from this lecture was using your website to promote your business. Today’s business world is becoming all online. People spend most of there time online and having an effective and interesting website will help promote your business. People can get coupons or discounts on the websites and this will help keep customers coming back and increase business.
Another thing I found helpful was when he said you need to connect with people of influences. People who are already going what you do can help you and if you comment on there blogs or retweet what they are saying, these people will see you are a hard worker and will want to hire you. This lecture was very helpful and I will definitely come back to it later in life.
The content being mentioned in the video was part of what David Meerman Scott has suggested in his book for every small business intend increase its sales numbers by building customer personas. Further, to keep your visitors longer on your website is the crucial role. It is always important for the marketers to think how to make your web audiences into potential customers.
If a restaurant wants to differentiate itself from the other competitors, the best way to do so is make your customers feel special. Therefore, building a customer persona becomes crucial. Next, the restaurant has to efficiently setup a landing page in order to increase sales and reinforce the behavior. For example, if the restaurant sets up its online delivery page, the land page has to include with future promotion information to further increase the chance of audience coming back to revisit the site. In conclusion, I believe the first video clip is very useful the business increase its sales on website.
I thought the talk was very interesting. In a lot of ways it reminded me of the NMDL lecture we had back in September. Thankfully Derek is a great speaker and keeps the audience interested on the topics. One of the most important aspects of this part of the talk was social media. I think it’s important to build your profile and then create content that people want to look at. One aspect that I would like to learn a little bit more about is putting numbers on conversions and showing clients quantifiable results. I also thought the refreshers such as “give a firm handshake” were helpful, especially for students who are graduating in December of May of this year and are hoping to find jobs in the digital marketing field!
This lecture provided me with some great information, thank you. One thing I found particularly interesting was the way you discussed having a firm handshake. It is nice to know that the one traditional thing my father always reminded us about is still so very important. Although some of the things mentioned in the video were discussed in our class at Walsh it was nice to be reminded of them again, 7 hours is a long time and we were thrown a lot of information, so hearing the highlights again was very helpful. From this lecture I take away the serious importance of understanding LinkedIn, and its ability to help me substantially as graduation approaches.
Thanks Derek for this informative lecture. It is fascinating when you said that with digital, business can do segmentation and get a big chance to serve the rest 80% of its customers, according to a 80/20 rule. Traditional marketing way only enables company to reach their best customers (20% of the customers who generate 80% of the profit) with limited media buyers. However, social media changed the rule. Nowadays, Digital allows smaller media buyers. With different digital marketing strategies, company now is able to reach different types of its customers via different media or different ways. However, my question is what criteria should company use when it tries to segment online customers in order to develop different digital strategies to reach them. It seems tricky to me when trying to track consumer behavior and preference on the Internet. You mention the Google Alert Tracker tool, but I still kind of confused about how to integrate it with segmentation. Could you please give me more tips about how to start the segmentation?
Thanks,
Denise
This video is really insightful, and I believe it can help a lot of starters get an exact understanding of the application of social media in marketing, and also enlighten some practitioners who are frustrated in dealing with digital marketing stuff. When I was watching the vide, I felt that it was interesting and so true when I heard that the reason people interact with the company online was because they want discount or coupon. It’s true to me. I’ve registered in several websites selling skincare products and allowed them to send newsletters to me; actually every morning I just skim the subjects of those annoying newsletters in my mailbox unless it shows a promotional code inside. And similarly I follow or “like” some brands on twitter and facebook for deal information sometimes. Meanwhile, in the video, a critical point that ideas are important really impressed me. It’s right that there are so many companies are using social media tools to promote themselves; however most of them don’t have a big idea to relate their brands with the target audience. What they’re doing on social media is just sending out messages, just persuasions, no instantaneous communication with the audience is conducted to figure out their needs and wants. That make their use of social media meaningless.
Derek’s comment about giving results to clients is really important. Communication with clients is something that people take for granted. People don’t necessarily consider it a vital part of business, but without great communication, there can be no effective business. Another important point of Derek’s lecture is how vital it is to utilize the wonderful materials that are available through technology. Business has always been as much about who you know as what you know. Through tools such as Linked In, it is easier and easier to become connected to people who may be able to help advance your career. In this day of technology, there is really no excuse for not being well-connected.
It’s nice to have a professor that can not only relate to “our generation” but also have insight on digital media. Retweeting is something I’ve been trying to accomplish recently. I became a Twitter member last year but hardly went on it and now I’m realizing the importance of getting yourself out there! I am trying to brand myself; therefore, making sure all my social media uses the same words and descriptions. I’m lacking on the hashtag department so I need to work on that but thanks to New Media Drivers license course I can be more efficient in finding important stories or even land a job!! Thank you Derek and I highly recommend this course to other students.
I could get a lot of information from video clip of Derek Mehraban’s speech. In these days, digital marketing and traditional marketing coexist with each other. Each marketing strategy has clear differance. Digital marketing have to consider many segments compared to traditional marketing. Changing of marketing tactics is so fluid. Social media is one of digital marketing and this social media channels have been becoming important position in digital marketing. Of course, marketers should consider both digital marketing and traditional marketing although we are living on digital lives. Marketers should use effectiveness of digital marketing and trational marketing’s advantage. If these are connecting each other, the result of marketing is very successful. Derek’s advice for using new media in marketing mix is very helpful and effective.
This presentation introduces the digital marketing and it is really help for me. Actually, there are many differences between digital marketing and traditional marketing. Firstly, you could reach various segments of target audience by ditial marketing while you could only reach singel target audience through traditional marketing. Secondly, you can track the audience who have view your websites by digital marketing but you can no do so through traditional marketing. In a word, digital marketing is more helpful to transmit ideas. As we all know, ideas are the resource of invention and they are valuable only when they are transmitted. On the other hand, sometimes digital marketing and traditional marketing should be closed connected. In a word, from the presentation I acquire the information of how to use different strategies to target the market.
Informative Lecture!
I envy your public speaking skills. Your message is extremely important for me in the rhelm of being a professional businessman. I’m in the sales specialization myself, giving a firm handshake and marketing myself as a bright savvy individual is something I continue to stride to become. I agree firmly that Linkedin is crucial to getting hired and reaching success by branding yourself on-line. Building up my rolodex is something I’ve been doing constantly for the past month or so. Reaching through my network on Linkedin from MSU to Chicago and beyond will be the online tool I’ll need. I went to a conference at the beginning of the month where a Linkedin speaker informed us of the connections of the connections that bring you towards the higher ups that will inevitably land you a job.
Retweeting is probably the biggest tid-bit I got from this presentation. I can get my name out there in “the pulse” as well as in the “business place”. People will follow.
This video is really enlightening which points out the unique roles of digital marketing in the era of social media. From the angel of connecting, relationships, influencing and engagement, the digital marketing endows us with abilities to connect with more people, and get more out from the Internet. All these will play important roles in a successful marketing campaign. And I can’t agree more that idea drives strategy. I think this is common whether in traditional marketing or in digital marketing. You still have to come up with creative ideas in social media in order to generate buzz and then even go viral. In addition, I wander how could we integrate digital marketing with traditional marketing in order to achieve the best outcome, as the functions of traditional marketing is still very significant in the current marketplace.
I think that it was interesting how Derek talked about how since Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. are so common that it is imperative for companies to differentiate from the competition. This information doesn’t just work for businesses that are trying to maintain or increase clients; it also works for students. Being able to stand out in a tough economy against other young professionals when vying for jobs is essential.
I also like the “SMART” board, where he talks about the keys to setting goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.
This video is very useful. I thought it was extremely interesting when discussing bounce rates. I was not aware that people had the ability to figure out how long people spend on each site and whether their bounce rate is low (good) or high (bad), and how to make your web page more “sticky”.
Also it was discussed about how new media has the ability to help segment your audience. I think this is definitely a step forward from just promoting your company to absolutely everyone, and allows people to target specifically who they want to, which in tern would cut down mass spending of the budget.
One thing that I hate to admit is that print is a dying medium. Like how evolution causes revolution, like how tv killed the radio star, digital media is starting to push out print. And it is doing so by being more efficient and easier to target your audience. The message of this blog is very powerful. I find online targeting to be very interesting as well as useful. The online targeting is useful for the advertiser and the consumer. This way, I can see the deals and specials that pertain to me. Over the summer, I was looking to purchase a pair of Hunter rain boots. Because I searched for them on amazon. I would see the deals for them online everytime I logged onto Facebook. This made looking for the best deals alot easier!
This video is very interesting and helpful to me. I did not know how the social media marking is important in the modern society. This lecture is about the importance of social media marketing. In the past, just well-maded product was very important in the markeitng. However, nowadays, connecting others is more important in the marketing. So, there are so many things to keep connected with people, such as Blog, Linkedin, and so on. Derek said we need to build our career and retweeting to others for keeping sharing. Also, Creating Digital Strategy is important; Idea and Persona. The market is more segmentated, so we need to find our target market and idea to keep best brand.
f
I really enjoyed watching this segment of the three part video. I am currently in the NMDL course I liked how watching this was a refresher in what we had learned in our first class meeting. It got me excited again about the vast possibilities of digital media. Since I am in the process of interviewing for jobs and building my Rolodex hearing some of your points really hit home with me. The section about having a firm handshake was something that I didn’t really think about, but now I will be sure to make a point to not only give a firm hand shake physically with potential employers, but also try and build my digital handshake. In addition, I really found the part about building my reputation online very interesting. I am going to need to start working harder to make my presence known in the digital world if I hope to one day get a job working in digital and social media. Finally, I found it very refreshing to hear Derek talk about how DVRing a program is like high stress T.V. I couldn’t agree more with that statement. Sometimes I really like having the break in the program to surf the web or even watch some of the commercials . Having the constant program running can sometimes be too intense.
Like the first day of class this video informed me on all the potential possibilities that the internet has to offer not only for myself personally, but what businesses need to take advantage of. The overall presentation made me realize how media is what drives advertising and in return reflects in sales or public understanding of relationships with companies. One topic that was touched on was Google and what the search engine has to offer. Google Adwords can solely drive the public eye to a product, brand, or person. I personally hope to gain more knowledge from NMDL course in my efforts of grasping Google and using it to push my name out into the web rather than relying on just Linkedin. I really enjoyed this presentation
I think this movie is really good source to know about digital marketing. Especially social media, I learned a lot from this movie. First is that consumers recommendation is the most important sources in social media, because social media is the most important movement in online world. Consumers share and talk about products that they ever used or liked. Also, in social media, they can PR themselves through social networking site, like facebook, twitters, linkedin and so on. For that, they can do digital marketing through those kinds of web site.
This presentation was a great source packed with information. It was especially superb introducing the digital marketing. I learned so much about the digital marketing as well as the differences between digital marketing and the traditional marketing. I learned that the digital marketing allows several segments of the targeted audiences, but on the other hand, the traditional media only allow a single segment of targeted audience at a time. This is because it will be pricier.
The digital marketing is very measureable to some extent. Web hosts can always check to see how many people visited their websites/blogs and use the online promotion according to the results. This is not saying that the traditional marketing should be gone. It still holds its values as a very important and influential way of connecting with the audience. I would say that a mixture of both traditional and digital media should be used to create a “Golden” result.
This presentation makes me rethink what social media is and how it works. At First, people use Social Media to keep in touch with their friend and make new ones who have the same interests. In other words, connecting was the primary goal of social media. Then, these social connections have been extended to company brand, not only to friends. Brands quickly made their communities to communicate with target consumers using social media, in fact to advertise their products or services. It is not easy for brands to reach their target customer offline. The task is time-consuming and inaccuracy. However, in a digital age, reaching target consumers is easier than in the fast. For example, in social networking, there are people or group who have same interest, similar demographic. This group can be the just exact target consumers for a certain brand. There are no better audiences who want see and hear your products. As for consumers, they can see just ads which are interesting at least for them. So, they would not be disturbed form untargeted advertisings. It is no wonder marketing or promotion using social media is a win-win situation all around. Moreover, I also agree that he success of social media strategy is depends on how long audience stay in company’s website. The more time social media users stay, the more likely target they will be real buyer.
Although social media begin as the tool where people connect each other, now it is more than just place where people keep in touch. Social media have become the best place where brands companies can find their target consumers easily.
Marketing has come a long way to get to where they are now. Digital marketing is slowly transforming the way media planners place promotion. Mehraban mentioned that social media is #1 on the web and we could only guess how much of a critical role social media plays in the marketing world. The main difference between traditional marketing and digital marketing is that digital marketing allows you to segment and clearly define your target audience. That used to be an impossible measurement in the real world of advertising because you can never predict your viewer’s action. But now, we can. With these accurate measurements, now companies will understand exactly what their customers want and desire. This has brought us to a entirely new genre of advertising and marketing.
For Part One, I found three pieces of information (that weren’t exactly the “high points”) extremely valuable, especially in today’s job market.
1. Firm hand shake. I am a HUGE advocate of the firm handshake, and I try to tell my friends how important I think it is all the time, so it was good to see Derek agreed and promotes it just as much as I do!
2. SMART for Goal Setting. I really like this acronym and I think it will be very easy to remember and reference and time I am working with clients on their goals.
3. The value of tech skills. I completely agree this is valuable. At my last job, I took a two day class on FrontPage so I could work on our Intranet pages. I would like to learn this more in depth with other programs that are actually used, because I really don’t think FrontPage is web designer’s number one choice. Derek’s mention of this reminded me that I still do want to do that, and now I am wondering how to fit it in my class schedule.
I strongly agree with this video material that consumer’s recommedation is helpful to people buying the product because social media is the number one activitiy on the Web. This new media allow people to interact each other to share their thought of brands or products. Furthermore, the web based communication boost electronic commerce. Good company will do is to leverage their marketing resources on both traditional and digital media. I strongly agree with this.
Part 2 talked about competitive analysis in depth. It is a very important aspect in the digital world. Companies should be able to compete with the other companies, but without knowing their ways of working, who group they target to market, and how the consumers view the company website, they would not be as “competitive.” Competitive analysis gives access to the companies to see their ranking along with the other companies. It also enables them to gain more control of their market. Bench marking tools can be useful to the companies to set up date points they need to improve upon. It is always good to know both the good and the bad side of everything.
Thank you for the great speech and it helped me to understand the introduction of digital marketing and social media. I understood how social media is closely related to the consumer recommendation. It helps people to purchase product because it is a fast and convineint way to contact to clients. In other word, people do not have to spend their time to reach to their companies and save their time. Compare to traditional media, new social media allow people to share their opinions of using brands and products. Sometimes, people get benefits from discount coupons.
It helped me to know some online tools. I do not really know them because there is number of limited tools that I am using. If I know more and more using online tools, it will also help to my future work.
Watching all three of the lectures almost as if I watched Derek’s lecture from class the Saturday all over again. Only this time it was more actually understanding. He really made Social Media a little more easy for me to follow. If it weren’t for his experience and expertise in the field, I don’t think I would really be able to get myself to join Twitter, Linkedin, or even create my own blog. Being pushed to do so makes me want to continue updating and posting to my sites It really can help in the long run.
I really liked how Derek talked about communication. It is a huge part of being involved in social media and a huge part of the Advertising world. Whether you are communicating vocally or on paper, such as a magazine ad, it is essential to know how. Derek makes me feel i need to still do a lot of work when it comes to the whole advertising and marketing world and I know partially now and will continue learning through his lessons, what it takes to be successful in the field.
The first video in this series was very interesting. I liked the point where Derek discussed that you can put out interesting content online, but if no one sees it then it has no value- you have to build relationships (via things like Tweets, Facebook, Linkedin, blogging). It is important to build a positive reputation to increase engagement. Digital strategy is extremely important, since simply having these social media pages is not enough. The pages have to have a persona and attract the correct target market. I think that many organizations today do not realize this importance. Maybe they should be watching this series of videos?
These three videos have been so helpful, I don’t even know where to begin. I wish that Derek Mehraban spoke to my ADV 486 class this past semester; I have so many more ideas running through my mind that would have helped my ad campaign, but it is never too late to start a project or run with an idea or dream.
What I found the most helpful was when Mehraban was talking about the landing pages and how when you are targeting an audience or a “persona,” the landing page must be segmented toward them and to never send a targeted consumer to the regular homepage. Also, the fact that the landing page have one goal is something I probably would have overlooked before, but it makes so much sense. There are so many ways to become distracted and confused on the web, consumers want to find what they are looking for efficiently and effectively and if our client can’t help them do that, they will find a competitor who can.
Also, I found it interesting how many times Mehraban said to ask the client. Last semester, my professor, Dave Regan spoke about the hot questions to ask a client and how if you ask the right questions, you will get more insight and a better response, but I never thought you could ask the client that many questions…but it makes sense. You and your client are a collaboration; together you can help each other, together you can create an advertising campaign others will aspire to.
I really learn a lot from the video, but I really enjoyed the part about how Advertising is still interesting, and how although we still have DVR we like that extra time, we enjoy that time to surf. He then goes into talking about Digital Marketing, and how it is actually working. But what I found to be so interesting is that we still need to find that “big idea” that we want get to our customers. Digital allows us to segment and actually target and reach our customers. I also found it interesting how he showed and took us through the digital process.
I really enjoyed listening to part one of Derek’s lecture series. This part of the series is a great way for young professionals to learn some basic pointers regarding the marketing mix and new media. It’s really interesting to see how Derek has built his company and how he has applied his advice to his business ventures. Through his series, Derek proves that his advice and techniques are simple yet they produce results. I especially enjoy how Derek puts all off his ideas into layman’s terms — I can easily understand what he is talking about. This video is definitely something worth noting and coming back to for future reference.
I think you make a great point in saying that digital marketing requires a diverse skill set. The requirement for quantifiable statistics and its presentation to clients is something that will be a responsibility of both creatives and account guys.
Furthermore, this video really made me appreciate linked in as a career resource. I am graduating in the spring and looking for a job and linked in wasn’t really something i had been using.
I agree with this video that consumer’s recommedation is helpful to people’s attitude of buying products habit. The new media is one of the tools that people can share and talk each other about products.Using website to promote business is one of the strategy that company should do nowadays.
It is more effective than other strategy that can grabs people’s attentions.
I wanted to start off by commending Derek on his presentation zen. He is so at ease when talking to a crowd about his passion of digital marketing. This really helps me because just thinking about talking in front of that many people makes me dizzy. Anyway, the first point i wanted to touch upon was the eco friendly internship, that sound like a wonderful experience and opportunity. I will be looking further into this and hopefully enrolling. My second point to make was the “firm handshake” conversation. My fourth grade social studies teacher, Mr. Roraff would shake each kids hand daily before class and taught us the importance of the first impression handshake. I have never forgotten this and really enjoyed that you touched on it. My next point is Linkedin. I haven’t exactly gotten my grasp on this sites allure yet. This lecture made me realize that it is more of a tool for my career rather than for entertainment. My last point in SMART goals. I really liked the development aspect of this and how you can successfully go though your ideas with it. I will definitely be using this technique. Thanks again to Derek for this informative lecture!
Thanks Derek I really think that you gave an excellent overview of why it is so important to understand digital marketing in today’s business world. By using the tools that we learn in this class, that firm handshake that you talked about really means something. In business it is always so important to show the results that you have created for your client and I think that digital marketing (specifically using Google Analytics) can offer that in a very substantial manner. As a future professional I think that it is important to understand this technology well and be able to use it to my own advantage as well as that of my client.
I really enjoyed this video. This is a great lecture! I learned many things from this video. I realized the importance of using social media in marketing. Before I took this class, I did not know about how to use Linkedin and Twitter. After I made an account I realized that what are Linkedin and Twitter using for. Nowadays, most people do social media such as Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter. Digital marketing became more popular in marketing world. Social media is importance to advertiser to advertise their products on the online. Especially, Derek taught us about the importance of creating the idea for the marketing strategy to attract consumers. This lecture was helpful to me to know about digital marketing world.
This video helps and gives me so much information about digital marketing. The most interesting part of this lecture for me is how to connect with people in social media and advertising. Social media is doing big role to connect with people and company. Derek told that social media is #1 activity on the web. Twitter, Facebook, blogs, LinkedIn, etc are all contribte to future career prospects. This could be future employers or people who have matching with you on some skill or projects. Using digital media has important role in the business world to connect people. Also, I got new knowledge of Re-tweeting. It is really helpful to build connection with people and business on Twitter. For setting goal stratgey that Derek explained about was useful to drive idea strategy. Using social media is help us to find out better clients. This lecture was great and will help me a lot in my future work.
This video really seemed to emphasize the importance digital marketing has in response to current advertising issues. It notes how things have evolved from traditional marketing to something that is much more accessible. Derek stresses the importance of “building your rolodex” and how websites such as “linkedin” are allowing more and more individuals (and companies for that matter) to do so. Its interesting how social websites such as “linkedin” were once so irrelevant and seem to be making more and more of an impact on the business world.
I didn’t even think about how easy it would be to track your results through digital marketing. I am an account management advertising major and I love playing around and manipulating numbers to prove a point which is what Derek is saying we will have to do through interpreting charts and numbers to sell the numbers. I also interned at an agency this summer and was in charge of creating social media for some of our small clients that didn’t have a social media presence yet. However, each client was scared to go beyond Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in fear of not knowing what to do when I left. But like Derek said everyone is on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube so that doesn’t differentiate your company. Hopefully when I go back over Christmas break they will let me experiement a little further into digital marketing!
Great Lecture Derek!
This lecture reinforced the importance of using social media. It is especially important for graduating students; the more people you connect with on social media the more connections you make that could potentially lead to a career. I also liked how you talked about the importance of a firm handshake- and I couldn’t agree more! It is all about confidence and the way you carry yourself. Employers can tell whether or not you have a passion for the career you are trying to reach through gestures and body language-including your handshake. I also liked the SMART diagram you used to show how to recommend digital goals to a client. These goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound.
Derek made a lot of great points throughout this video. I enjoyed when he talked about the importance of relationships you can make through social media sites. Not too long ago it was always difficult to be connected with someone you wanted to do business with that you didn’t really know too well. However, now with all the social media sites like Linkdin, you can be connected to thousands of people instantly.
I also thought the point of the presentation when Derek talked about the segmenting of a market was also interesting. Years ago it may have been a lot harder to segment a market and reach each segment in different ways. However, it is a lot more acceptable now as digital marketing allows people to segment a market in a more efficient and clear way so that they can reach that market more directly.
After watching this first video I have a better understanding of Google Analytics and how companies can benefit from it. I also learned what “bounce rate” means and “sticky”. I was in a meeting a few months ago at work and the meeting was about the iphone app we were developing with a third party. The guy from the third party kept saying how “sticky” that app was going to be and I had no clue what he was talking about. Now I get sticky means keeping someone engaged in the site. Its the little things sometimes.
I’m glad that Derek talked about the importance of having a diverse skillset. Employers are looking for results, and with results come exposure to numbers. For creative students, this poses a challenge to adapt to the evolving entry-level job market.
Building a strong network of area professionals is becoming increasingly easy for college students through the use of the social networking site, LiknedIn. In many instances, strong connections have been known to provide references for job opportunities. Making the best appearance, whether in person or online, helps to develop your personal image and brand. Successfully building strong relationships as graduation approaches is vital key to job placement.
This video was interesting because its talks about building your own personal brand on LinkedIn. For me I have heard this speech on a couple of occasions but I’m glad other students are learning this too. Derek talks about interacting with potential contacts, engaging them in your brand, and keeping up with it.
Wow, this is something I have to face really soon, actually! I am making a Twitter and Facebook for my mother’s company, and I will have to deal with the fact that simply making the company present in social media today is not good enough, because all of the other companies in her field probably have a Twitter and Facebook as well.
We need to utilize the ideas Derek outlines, especially that of leaving a digital handshake. We want people to interact with and remember the company and associate that handshake with an attitude, a brand, and a personality.
When I went to the first seminar for New Media Drivers License, I was very overwhelmed. Twitter, LinkedIn, blogging, Facebook and the endless lists of social media tools. I didn’t think that I could do it. I just thought it was too much. But I’ve been learning so much and coming around to all of these uber important ideas of making a name for our self and like Derek said, building your roladex.
I agreed with Marissa Schullo. These three videos were much like our first class seminar, but instead of feeling overwhelmed, it made much more sense to me.
The lecture was really informative. Like a lot of people who have already commented, I too thought it was similar to our first meeting almost a month ago. Like every week in class the lectures main concept is how to connect with people using the social media tools online already available. To get your name out there you have to develop it and gain credibility. I remember first hearing the importance of a firm handshake when I was younger and never really thought it would be important but I have known for a long time it goes a long in meeting people in everyday life.
Great video Dr. Cole actually made us watch it the other week in his other class I have with him. I thought a great topic that Derek brought up was using digital media that allows you to segment your business, instead of doing mass advertising. You can do this by targeting a specific person and get direct them to a specific landing site (which I would like you to expand a little more one that if possible in another class?) that is exactly from them, so that way this potential customer can then subscribe to a companies site. This way they are getting the information that is specific to them and not a general group of people that they might just pass by any other time they are surfing the web. Derek mention how we can use this in a business setting to get people to put a value on how much it is worth (exact dollar amount) to a company. This is what can help justify your salary and how beneficial your work is to that company which is a great asset to have when working with another company to show them how beneficial it can be for their business.
One of the most interesting things I learned in this video was the importance of being involved in the online community in order to get your name out. At 7:41, Professor Mehraban discusses how doing simple things like retweeting will help you gain exposure and build your online reputation. It really illustrated to me that building your online reputation is not impossible, but it does involve a large amount of work. You need to start from the ground up and slowly build up your involvement so that other people will notice you.
This lecture was great and an awesome refresher for the first lecture in the new media drivers license class that I took. There was a lot of information in this lecture which was great and seeing it a second time really help me to absorb it all. One of the biggest things I got outta this specific lecture was the concept of retweeting. I never had never even looked at twitter as something that I wanted to get involved with but now i see how it can be used as such a big tool to get your name out there in the new media world. Something else that i have heard about before but never thought of implementing was Linkedin. This is such an amazing tool that is a must have for todays competition in the job world. Great stuff
When listening to Derek Mehraban I realized how many resources I have at my fingertips. Yes, I am in this class and have been asked to make these websites, but I didn’t think about in a networking way in such depth. They way he explained it in this video was much more understandable than the homework explanations. I really enjoy networking and I am worried that I am not going to be as good at networking online as I am in person. I hope that I will take the time to do this before I am graduated and then realize how far behind the times I am.
LinkedIn is a really valuable resources. I completely agree with connecting with influential people on these networks. It’s important for students to realize how important these contacts are. I also like what Mehraban points out about doing the work to get these contacts. I crucial to work hard to put yourself out there and make yourself known to your contacts. It helped me realize the importance of building my personal brand.
There is a lot more work required to be successful with digital marketing. Similar what Derek had mentioned, the online world is dramatically more intense these days. There are a variety of more opportunities to work with, and to optimize on. Not only can digital marketing be beneficial to businesses, but it can be extremely valuable for individuals. While it can be overwhelming having to maintain an array of different networking sites, by keeping yourself current and easy to find information about, that may give a person the edge that they need.
I always enjoy watching and listening to Derek because he points out something that I would have just looked over.
I found this lecture great and informative. The closer I get to graduating the more and more I realize how important it is to build your personal brand and create a good impression with anyone you meet. I like how Derek talks about the impression you make with people on and offline and the importance of each. It’s amazing how a connection you make, even if small can lead to a friendship, more networks, and a possibly a job.
I think the advice to focus on your LinkedIn rather than your Facebook is great advice. With the hours we all spend on Facebook every week, we could take a fraction of that time and use it to enhance and improve our LinkedIn profile because ultimately that is going to be much more beneficial in the long run.
I thought the discussion about getting yourself out there was interesting. you spoke a lot about re-tweeting and getting known by the companies you follow. Your networking ideas were excellent and really overall, absolutely correct. We do not take full advantage of the social media activities we have available to us. Understanding that we shouldn’t just be tweeting, but we NEED to be heard and seen. Just making posts on your blog and social media devices do not accomplish what you need. You ned to be seen. You need to make posts that people will want to read and write them properly. I also find it interesting the reason why people chose to follow…. because they want coupons and discounts, and that is absolutely true.
Dear Derek,
I love how you pointed out in the beginning that the world that is now known as the Internet has completely transformed the way we communicate today, and how it has evolved since you first started. This was a great follow-up seminar to the one we had on that first Saturday. I also agree that consumers “like” or “follow” a brand in order to receive incentives. This is one of the main reasons I connect myself to brands and found myself relating to much of this through the work I do in my internship.
This lecture was highly enlightening. One of the main things I took away from it is the importance of Linkedin. I have a Linkedin page and I know it presents an opportunity for your resume to be available digitally to a huge number of people, but I did not realize it did much more. Linkedin has the ability to let you network with thousands of people who are movers in the industry and is unique in this capacity. It is a free resource that should be utilized by anyone serious about being employed as we his students soon will be. I also found it quite interesting that a man so deeply involved in the digital realm still found a handshake to be as important as anything in determining if a prospective employee was suited for the job.
What I liked about this video is how Derek touched on the importance of LinkedIn. I have still been a little weary about the whole thing & understanding the importance of “connecting” with people in the industry. It is inspiring & it seems that it makes it so much easier through connections & relationships.
I was in this class when Derek presented this information. It was really interesting to listen to and learn how to integrate social media into a marketing plan. I have recently used his advice on “imitate and innovate”. I am doing a project in another class and it is definitely coming in handy (the class he came to speak to).
I’m glad that I learned early on in my first year at Michigan State the value of connections – one of my journalism professors sent me an email about a summer job opportunity, and I used another one of my journalism professors as a contact when I applied for the job.
When I got the job, the first professor brought me on to two of her documentary projects, since I’d be in town all summer. I’m connected to both on LinkedIn, and over the past six months working at my job
Derek Mehraban’s ideas and presentation of topics in social media are well-worded and insightful. Social Media is an ever expanding world and the only way to survive is remaining relevant. Being visible can only help you as much as people actually see you.
I’m glad that I learned early on in my first semester at Michigan State the value of connections – one of my journalism professors sent me an email about a summer job opportunity, and I used another one of my journalism professors as a contact when I applied for the job.
When I got the job, the first professor brought me on to two of her documentary projects, since I’d be in town all summer. Over the past six months working at my job I’ve learned just how respected both of my professors are. Though neither of them are my professors now, I stay connected to them through LinkedIn and also follow them on Twitter and occasionally receive emails from them about new opportunities I may be interested in. My connections with them have opened up to a whole new network of people for me, and I’m incredibly appreciative of their help in getting my foot in the door.
As mentioned in the video, digital marketing and traditional marketing such as Advertising are both very important in today’s marketing strategy. I am interested in the digital marketing part. It is a way to insprire our creative ideas and use these ideas into some real practice. Recently I have learnt a concept “guerrilla marketing”, which was invented as an unconventional system of promotions that relies on time, energy and imagination. With the help of social media, we could achieve more marketing goals in forms of guerrilla marketing rather than conventional advertising, with a smaller budget and a even bigger impact!
I like how the difference in focusing on consumers is vastly different comparing digital and traditional media is pointed out in this. You can tailor your audiences’ message and segment who sees it versus thousands of impressions on people not interested in your product. The marketing process is so much more direct, you don’t have to fool around with asking your customer to visit your site on their own, you can instantly bring them to the information you want them to see. Powerful stuff.
This was a very informative lecture and really helped give me a better grasp on social media and digital marketing. The topic regarding connections was the most relevant and applicable to my life. I am beginning my hunt for jobs and as Derek said “ LinkedIn is one of the most valuable tools.” I strongly agree with this statement and think that building a strong LinkedIn profile, making connections and building relationships with influential people with be extremely beneficial in my job search. However, since everybody these days are on social networking sites such as Linkedin, Facebook, etc. It is crucial to differentiate yourself from others and get yourself noticed in the social media world. Commenting on people’s blogs, tweeting, adding links to your own blog, along with other tactics will help build a reputation in the digital world and give a strong boost when creating a personal brand.
I really agree with Derek’s points about how linked-in can help current students find jobs and make connections through friends. I know that as May rolls around I will definitely be spending a large sum of time checking out linked-in profiles and trying to score my first ‘real’ job. I know that social media will play a role in how I connect with those hiring in my field.
