Criticisms of Twitter are not particularly new. The creation and widespread acceptance of Google+ has intensified these criticisms and now some are claiming that it is Twitter and not FaceBook who will be the big loser because of Google+’s entry into the social media marketplace. The criticism comes in a variety of stances, but they all boil down to the same fundamental lack on Twitter’s part: creative developments. The Twitter of 2011 is very similar to the Twitter of 2010 and 2009. Google, however, is very different as is FaceBook.

Right now the digital agency should not be too concerned. The main reason is because advertising on Twitter is still nascent and relatively reserved for large firms. Even for those firms advertising on Twitter, this criticism, if true, will take time to manifest itself. Despite the rapid growth of Google+, Twitter has not taken a hit in its traffic. If the criticisms are correct, then eventually a trade-off will take place and those firms still advertising on Twitter will see their ROI drop. The tradeoff will also manifest itself once Google+ begins selling advertising space on its site. Until these changes take place Twitter will be fine, which just means they have a window of opportunity to make changes to stave off a coming decrease in usage.
