Twitter Opening Advertising Channel
Fri Sep, 2010 by Derek Mehraban
If you add Burger King to your list of contacts on Twitter you might begin to receive “promoted tweets” from other businesses in the same category (McDonalds, Wendy’s, Arby’s etc.) through a new targeting technology Twitter is hoping will increase its advertising revenue. In other words, Twitter has created a means of advertising that is reminiscent of pay per click advertising by finding a means to target specific groups of consumers by the businesses that those people choose to affiliate with.

Millions of people who use Twitter have added business contacts making this a potentially interesting new challenge to get particular messages to more likely consumers. In particular, if you have ways of creating positive comparisons between your product and your direct competitor/s this could be a very good way to create differentiation in the mind of likely consumers.
It remains to be seen how Twitter users will take to receiving promoted Tweets. If this system works like Ad Words, it could be potentially more lucrative because of how many people receive Twitter messages through mobile phones.
