Below the trending topics on the Twitter homepage Twitter has been experimenting with text ads. The ads are not labeled ads. These ads are probably also not a large income generator for Twitter since they do not appear in a user’s timeline.
This testing does show that Twitter is committed to trying out new forms of advertising in new places, even if they do not seem terribly profitable. This change also possibly speaks to the growing use of advertising revenue by Twitter. There is one other aspect of this new ad that needs inspection. If enough people are coming to the Twitter webpage, then that speaks to what Twitter is seeing. Maybe these ads actually are seen widely. As the number of Twitter users grows so too will the number of people seeing these ads.
