You may notice in the book The New Rules of Marketing & PR by David Meerman Scott he spends a page or two on the topic of search engine marketing. However, if you notice his entire book is about search engine marketing. His belief that the best thing you can do is develop good content that your audience wants to read as your major source of SEO is a good one. I hope after reading his book you understand this concept.
Think of Google reading your web page, similar to how you read a book. Top to bottom and left to right. In order for Google to rank your site (or individual page from your site) and to be found on search engines, it is important to pay attention to how you write and organize your page. A strong headline, relevant subheads (h1 tags), good content related to both your headline and subhead, links that help tell the story, and a clear and concise ending to the page that reinforces what you want to be found for in the first place.
This is the content that David Meerman Scott speaks of. You develop content for each page of your site, and each page has a goal – an audience. What does this person want to read about? You title your page to make it relevant to them, and you create content for that user, and for the goal you have established. You can also use tools like online PR to publish content that is SEO friendly, and can drive traffic to your business.
Things to consider for SEO on your site:
- Strategy for keywords/keyword research
- Content development
- Inbound links
- Site structure/information architecture
- On site optimization
- PR

Thanks for the careful read of my book. I firmly believe that SEO is about great content, not about fiddling with technology.
If you search engine optimize a crappy site, it’s just slightly less crappy.
Thanks
David
