Facebook is well on its way to become the main destination for internet users. Despite that, however, there is incredible growth among niche social networks. The Pinterest explosion, 11.5 million new users form May 2011 to January 2012, is only an example. Tumblr has also seen some remarkable growth albeit much more modest than Pinterest’s growth. Tumblr is finding space for brands to maintain a presence and develop some engagement among customers. What’s important is that people are looking for new ways to express themselves and new networks to do so on. People are keeping their Facebook and Twitter accounts, but interested in finding new methods for expression.
The social media agency needs to try to be ahead of the curve. Developing a presence on social networks that are not yet large nor even profitable can be a lucrative use of efforts. Because many of these networks are still small it should not require much effort tot develop and maintain a presence. There are however, millions of people out there looking for new channels and the tried and true Facebook presence may no longer be enough to capture those users’ attention.
