Digital Public Relations on a Budget

February 21st, 2009 by Derek Mehraban

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make a splash with digital PR. There are many free tools just waiting for you to put the word out about your company, product, or event. Learn to use these tools and you can grow your business, and improve search engine results for your business!

Digital PR involves writing press releases that are important, use relevant keywords, and will drive traffic to your web site or landing page. You can optimize the headline of your press release (similar to a blog post) so it shows up when people search for those terms.

Similar to how your Linkedin page returns high for your name – because of the Linkedin.com domain which is attached to your name, your press release will return high because domains like PR.com are ranked very high.

Think of all the press releases submitted to these free PR sites. Those are all web pages. And if 1000 people submit press releases through your free service each day, that makes for a lot of new web pages and content online. Google rewards fresh content, and these PR sites do very well.

Also, some PR sites submit your news to Google News, Yahoo News or Ask.com news. Some cost money and some are free. I usually use the free ones for news that is good, but not worth paying $99 for a release. If I want to spend some money to really make a splash with my PR I will invest in a Market Wire type service. For $200 you can do an SEO enhanced news release with lots of quality back links.

Here are my favorite PR sites.

#1. PR.com - is the best for free, and great for paid. They allow you to submit PR w/o paying a red cent. It still returns very high in search engines, but you do not get any back links. If you do pay some money you can create links back to your site. The advantage of PR.com is that you can put keywords in your link text. A Google bonus.

#2. MarketWire.com – I use this for paid releases, and I was very happy when I did so. My last paid release got big hits on Wall Street Journal Marketwatch, and Yahoo News. These quality back links are good for my site, and help drive traffic to my services.

#3. 1888PressRelease.com – this service is A-OK. Is free and works very well to get the word out.

When I submit a free press release, I will often submit to up to three free press release sites. This ensures I get lots of views, and works well for SEO. You can find other press release sites, and here is a directory of free PR Sites.

Don’t forget that one of the best places to submit digital PR is your blog. And that is free, and you can control the backlinks. Good luck in your digital PR journey!
