For those of us lamenting the loss of single networks and custom advertisements, Mother Nature Network shows it is still a viable business model. The network is a portal for consumers wishing to be as green as possible. They do not use Adsense or any other advertising network. Instead their advertising real estate is handled in house.
What is really encouraging is that Mother Nature Network, while large, is not a behemoth. According to ComScore it only ranks fifth among green internet locations. The Network became profitable in 18 months.
This can be seen as part of a larger trend. Customers appreciate products and pricing, but they also appreciate something more. More and more people are willing to be socially conscientious and give up a lower price or convenience for that product. This trend opens possibilities for marketers, as the formula is no longer advertising a simple point on the price curve.
