Android Has More Apps than iOS
Thu Apr, 2011 by Derek Mehraban
A new report by Distimo, an application analytics firm, shows there are now more applications for the Android OS than for iOS based platforms. The Android Market boasts almost 13,000 more free applications now available for download. The Apple App Store, however, has almost three times as many for-pay applications available for download. Part of this growth can be explained by the open source nature of Android. Google wanted to allow the frustrated and creative user the ability to tinker with their phones.
Digital marketers should take this as yet another sign that their future might lie in Android based advertising rather than Apple based advertising. Android has not been around as long and offering more apps speaks to the growth of Android based platforms. It is also telling when the Android based tablets are only just now hitting the market. But the main reason why marketers should pay attention is because there are so many free apps available. Makers of apps would like to be compensated for their time and if not selling the app, then advertising revenue seems to be the next obvious choice for app developers to turn.
